FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

your questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about the EU withdrawal button obligation.

What exactly is the EU withdrawal button?

The withdrawal button is a mandatory digital function on your webshop that allows consumers to cancel their order online without logging in, calling, or emailing your customer service. It is required under Directive (EU) 2023/2673 for all EU webshops from 19 June 2026.

What's the difference between the withdrawal button and a regular return form?

The withdrawal button is the new obligation coming into effect June 2026. It must be prominently placed on your website or app, accessible without login, and guide the consumer through a two-step process: entering their details, then confirming the cancellation. It must stay available throughout the entire 14-day withdrawal period.

The model withdrawal form is a separate, existing requirement. A standardised EU template that gives consumers an alternative way to submit their cancellation, for example by email or post. The recommended model is a digital return form, like the one Returnless provides. It's the most practical way to comply to regulations, and it gives you everything you need to process returns and issue a refund.

Does the withdrawal button need to be in my customer account area?

The withdrawal button must be accessible without login. Consumers who ordered as a guest must be able to cancel as a guest too. You may include it inside a customer account, but that cannot be the only place. A direct link in the order confirmation email or a publicly accessible page on your website is required.

From when is the withdrawal button mandatory?

From 19 June 2026 for all webshops selling in the EU. We recommend implementing it well before the deadline to make sure everything works well before enforcement begins.

Does this apply if my webshop is not based in the EU?

Yes. The obligation applies to any webshop selling to consumers in the EU, regardless of where the business is registered. If you ship to EU customers, the withdrawal button requirement applies to you.
